Doctoral assessments
The doctoral study and examinations are governed by the Doctoral Degree Regulations of the Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics:
- Doctoral Degree Regulations of 10 February 2009 valid until 15 May 2012 (German)
- Doctoral Degree Regulations of 16 May 2012 valid until 14 October 2018 (German)
- General Doctoral Degree Regulations of the University of Passau valid as of 15 October 2018 (legal binding: German, courtesy translation in English), of 1 Dezember 2020 amending the previous regulation of 3 August 2018)

Required documents for application for doctoral study (as of October 2018)
Application for acceptance as a doctoral candidate (legal source § 8 General Doctoral Degree Regulations of August 3, 2018, as amended on December 01, 2020; slightly different rules apply to doctorates in joint procedures with a foreign university, see § 17 of the General Doctoral Degree Regulations)
- written application for admission to doctoral stuy, to be submitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Examiners for Doctoral Awards;
- proofs regarding the fulfillment of the acceptance requirements, i.e. relevant certificates and diplomas regarding the fulfillment of the acceptance requirements according to § 3 of the subject doctorate regulations in certified copies (for details see below); typically Master's certificate and Master's diploma;
- a declaration specifying the doctoral degree sought ("Dr. rer. nat." or "Dr.-Ing." or "Dr. phil. nat.") and stating that this doctoral degree or any equivalent doctoral degree has not previously been obtained or that the pursuit of this degree has not previously been finally denied, unless the applicationis for resitting the doctoralexaminationasprovided for by this regulation;
- a specification of the subject in which the doctoral degree is to be awarded (Computer Science or Mathematics);
- (in general) a supervision agreement;
- curriculum vitae in German or English. This should, in particular, show your education history (esp. with an account of the academic development) and any work experience;
- in duly justified cases, proof of German and English language skills;
- the specification of data according to Art. 64 para. 3 Bavarian Higher Education Act (BayHschG) (data on initial enrollment, data on graduation, data according to Art. 42 para. 4 sentence 2 nos. 1 to 4, 6 and 12 such as surname, first name, etc.).

One of the following:
- a good Diplom, Magisteror Master's degree and examination certificatein computer science or mathematics or a related discipline, awarded by a German* university or an equivalent degree awarded by a foreign higher education institution
or
- the Bavarian state examination certificate for teachers at Gymnasiumsecondary schools, if the dissertation ('Zulassungsarbeit') was written on a topic related to mathematics or computer science and received a minimum mark of 'Gut' (according to the German marking scheme)
or
- a good Master's degree and examination certificate in computer science or mathematics or a related discipline, awarded by a German* university of applied sciences ('Fachhochschule') or an equivalent degree from a foreign higher education institution
or
- a good Diplom and examination certificate in computer science or mathematics or a related discipline, awarded by a German* university of applied sciences ('Fachhochschule') or with an overall average mark of 2.0 or better (according to the German marking scheme)
* Please note that 'German' in this context is defined as 'within the area of application of the German Basic Law'.
Documents to be submitted for the doctoral procedure (if admitted before Oktober 2018)
Thesis submission (pursuant to §§13 and 14 of the Doctoral Degree Regulations, as amended on 16 May 2012; slightly different rules apply to doctorates in joint procedures with a foreign university, see §23-27 of the Doctoral Degree Regulations.)
- a copy of the letter of admission to doctoral study
- the doctoral thesis written in German or English
- a cover sheet with the following information:
- this thesis is submitted to the Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics
- month and year of submission
- the number of copies in typescript or print is to be coordinated with the Dean's office. The printed copies as well as one electronic version are to be submitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Examiners for Doctoral Awards (data format and data carrier to be agreed upon with the Chairperson of the Board of Examiners for Doctoral Awards)
- an affidavit from the doctoral candidate, declaring that the presented thesis is his/her own work – i.e. prepared without help from others, without using any sources and aids other than those disclosed in the thesis – and that all ideas taken from other sources, whether reproduced verbatim or expressed in the author's own words, have been identified as such
- a declaration to the effect that the doctoral thesis has not previously been published in full
- when publishing excerpts of the doctoral thesis, a register (including a notice identifying the part of the text published) should be enclosed, as well as a copy of the publication
- declaration by the candidate that the thesis has not been the subject of another doctoral or other assessment
- declaration by the doctoral candidate, indicating any doctorates previously attempted or completed, indicating the exact type of doctoral degree
- if required, the doctoral candidate's written request, to be sent to the Chairperson of the Board of Examiners for Doctoral Awards, to hold the viva voce examination in English (this must be approved by all members of the Board of Examiners for Doctoral Awards)
Documents to be submitted for the doctoral procedure (if admitted since October 2018)
Admission to the doctoral examination and thesis submission (pursuant to § 9 of the General Doctoral Degree Regulations; slightly different rules apply to doctorates in joint procedures with a foreign university, see § 17 of the General Doctoral Degree Regulations.)
- a copy of the official notice of decision(Bescheid)on admission as a doctoral student;
- where required, proof of compliance with the ancillary conditions set forth in the admission notice;
- five printed bound copies of the thesis (in German or English) and an electronic copy;
- if applicable, a statement on the language of the oral examination (defence)
- the following written declarations:
- an affidavit stating that the thesis was written independently and without any undue help from others and that all the materials and sources used andpassages quoted verbatim or paraphrased from other works have been clearly identified as such;
- an assurance to the effect that this same thesis or a similar version has not previously been submitted to this or another faculty for the purpose of obtaining anacademic degree;
- an assurance to the effect that the doctoral student has not previously obtained the sought doctoral degree or an equivalent doctoral degree and that completion ofthis degree has not been finally rejected;
- the cover sheet should contain, among other things, the following information:
- this thesis is submitted to the Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics
- month and year of submission
- a comprehensive list of the doctoral student's publications related to the thesis must be presented to the faculty (with references to which part of the doctoral thesis the publication relates and what the applicant's own contribution is in each case) as well as copies (at least: one copy for each reviewer) of the relevant publications.
